Smaller Engines, Bigger Sounds - Wall Street Journal (blog) May 21, 2012
By Joseph B. White There's nothing like the primal growl of a big V-8 engine with wide open exhaust pipes and few pollution controls. But such motors are going the way of the saber tooth tiger. As car makers respond to demands to make engines smaller
Fisker defends Karma blamed for setting house on fire - USA TODAY May 21, 2012
Fisker, however, is standing by its plug-in hybrid sedan and has released a statement saying the Karma's battery, engine and exhaust system passed rigorous tests and received the necessary certification before the car went on sale.
Engine Could Boost Fuel Economy by Half - Next Big Future May 21, 2012
Diesel engines are 40 to 45 percent efficient in using the energy in fuel to propel a vehicle, compared to roughly 30 percent efficiency for gasoline engines. But diesel engines are dirty and require expensive exhaust-treatment technology to meet
US EPA: Navistar Faced Shutdown Without Penalties For Engines - Wall Street Journal May 21, 2012
Navistar, the third largest seller of heavy-duty trucks in the US, had been using pollution credits to meet the EPA's 2010 requirement for an ultra-low level of nitrogen oxide in diesel engine exhaust. But EPA warned Navistar early this year that it
Scientists work on ways of powering rocket trip to Mars - The Republic May 21, 2012
Huntsville scientists will be firing atoms into atoms on Redstone Arsenal this summer as they try to develop a small, lightweight pulsed nuclear fusion power system. "If this works," says Dr. Jason Cassibry, an associate professor of engineering at the
There’s nothing like the primal growl of a big V-8 engine with wide open exhaust pipes and few pollution controls.
But such motors are going the way of the saber tooth tiger. As car makers respond to demands to make engines smaller and more efficient, they are devising more sophisticated ways to simulate the sonic experience of power.
The latest generation of the BMW M5 uses what the company calls “Active Sound Design” technology, “to deliver an accurate reproduction of the engine’s sound through the car’s audio system.”
The recently launched Porsche 911 uses a “Sound Symposer” to capture and amplify sounds from the engine’s intake manifold and transmit them into the car’s cabin.
Now, Ford Motor Co., working with technology from German auto supplier Mann+Hummel Group, is using a “symposer” system to make the turbo-charged four cylinder under the hood of its compact Focus ST sound like something bigger.
Ford’s system uses a tube attached to the intake manifold, and run through a box that filters out buzzy, whiny noises and boost frequencies in the 200 to 450 hz range that can be muffled in a turbo-boosted engine. Guitar players often use an A note at 440hz as a reference for tuning. The internet is rich in sound clips of tones within that frequency band, including this link: http://www.mindspring.com/~scottr/zmusic/

A: your looking at 161Lbs of torque and 191 Horse but I believe both those numbers are AT engine numbers and not at the wheels, with just the stock engine and nothing else I would say you have extremely little chance in taking on just about any year Iroc (answered by silencetheevil8 on September 12, 2007)

A: In order to propel itself, an airplane needs to expend energy. And no matter how carefully done, this incurs a raise in overall entropy. To get some air to move faster than the environment creates eddies on the boundary of the jet flow, and those eddies (answered by Vincent G on April 07, 2007)
